NBS: Kerosene price declined by 6.60% in January

The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) has said the average retail price of household kerosene fell by 6.60 per cent last month.

It noted that the price declined from N467.97 last December to N437.11 last month.

In its document entitled: Household Kerosene Price Watch Price Watch (January 2022,” the NBS said: “The average retail price per litre of Household Kerosene (HHK) paid by consumers in January 2022 stood at N437.11 from N467.97 in December 2021 showing a decrease of 6.60 percent on a month-on-month.”

It also noted that on a year-on-year comparison, the average price increased by 24.69 per cent from N350.55 in January 2021. According to the document, top three states with the highest average price per litre in January 2022 were Ebonyi with N652.78 followed by Cross River with N550.00 and Enugu with N527.78. While states with the lowest average prices per litre were Bayelsa, Sokoto and Jigawa with N277.78, N321.43 and N326.39.

NBS said the average price per gallon of kerosene paid by consumers decreased to N1528.74  last month from N1582.73 last December, indicating a decline in average retail price by 3.41 percent monthly.

On a year-on-year, according to the Bureau, the average price per gallon of kerosene increased by 28.34 percent from N1191.13 in January 2021.

The three states with the highest average retail price were Enugu with N1988.08 followed by Jigawa with N1965.38 and Rivers, N1930.26, said NBS.

Similarly, states with the lowest price were Adamawa, Yobe and Borno with N862.50, N1150.00 and N1155, it added.

In a similar document entitled “Automotive Gas Oil (Diesel) Price Watch (January 2022)”, the NBS said the average retail price of Automotive Gas Oil (Diesel) paid by consumers increased by 28.12 percent on a year-on-year from N224.86 per litre in January 2021 to N288.09 per litre in January 2022.

According to the report, On a month-on-month, the average retail price of Diesel stood at N288.09 per litre in January 2022 indicating a decline of 0.44 per cent from N289.37 last December.

NBS said looking at the State variations of average retail prices, the top three states with the highest average price per litre in January 2022 were Ebonyi, Edo and Osun with N343.00, N331.64, and N328.89.

It added that the states with the lowest average prices per litre were Yobe, Kano and Sokoto with N216.67, N224.29, and N225.73.

According to the document, the zonal distribution of average retail prices shows that South-East has the highest with N317.45 followed by Southwest and Southsouth with N314.25 and N303.05.

NBS said the zone with the lowest average retail price was the North-west with N243.62.

The NBS also said in another document entitled: “Liquefied Petroleum Gas (Cooking Gas) Price Watch (January 2022),” that the average price for refilling a 5kg cylinder of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (Cooking Gas) stood at N3657.57 in January 2022.

It showed an increase of 1.75 per cent monthly from N3594.81 recorded last December, said the bureau.

It also noted that on a year on year, the average retail price of cooking gas increased by 87.66 per cent from N1949.02 in January 2021.

NBS noted that the  states with the highest average price for the refilling of 5kg Cylinder for Liquefied Petroleum Gas (cooking gas) were recorded in Niger with N4125.00, Benue with N4110.00 and Cross River with N3994.88, while the states with the lowest average price were recorded in Adamawa, Yobe and Bauchi with N2410.39, N2555.85 and N2599.37 respectively.

It said prices analysis by zones shows that average retail price of Cooking Gas was highest in the South-East with N3896.03 followed by North-Central with N3856.87 and South-South with N3805.43, while the zone with the lowest average retail price was the North-East at N3166.33.

It further said the average price for the refilling of 12.5kg cylinder for Liquefied Petroleum Gas (Cooking Gas) increased to N7413.25 in January 2022 from N7332.04 in December 2021 by 1.11percent monthly.

It noted that similarly, on a year on year, the average retail price for refilling 12.5kg cooking gas increased by 77.45 per cent from ₦4177.55 in January 2021.

According to NBS, the states with the highest average price for the refilling of a 12.5kg Cylinder of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (Cooking Gas) were Osun with N8525.00, Abuja with N8400.00 and Oyo, N8225.

The NBS said the states with the lowest average price for the refilling of a 12.5kg cylinder for Liquefied Petroleum Gas (cooking gas) were Borno, Yobe and Bayelsa with N5881.39, N6625 and N6711.96.

Continuing, it noted that the average retail price of a 12.5kg Cylinder of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (Cooking Gas) by zones shows that average retail price was highest in the Southwest at N7835.07 followed by the Northcentral and Northwest with N7679.19 and N7463.94.
