Teenager bags ICAN scholarship for breaking institut’s record 

A 17 year old school certificate graduate, Master Jonathan Adewale has been offered scholarship to university level by the Institute of Chartered Accounts of Nigeria, CICAN.

Announcing the award at the 69th Induction Ceremony for new members, held Wednesday in Lagos, Mrs Comfort Olu Eyitayo, the President of ICAN disclosed that the scholarship to Adewale is for his outstanding achievement as the youngest candidate to have fully completed and passed all the lev of ICAN examination in record time.

Eyitayo, who is the 57th president of ICAN was full of encomium for the young lad who however could not be admitted as a fellow of ICAN at the ceremony due to his age, stressing that by law, minimum admission age is 21 years of age.

“He took ATS 1 in September 2020 and passed all in flying colors, six months later, he cleared ATS 2, and six months after, again he cleared ATS 3, which was September 2020.

“Haven completed all stages of ATS, he went further to start the professional stages, six months later, he cleared six levels, which was May 2021, and in November 2021, he cleared all his papers at the final part. He needs to be celebrated, he needs to be showcased to the world because this is what no one ever imagined that could be achieved. This is is the first time it happening.

“He has broken the glass ceiling in the institute. As at today, nobody has made this record in Nigeria. We are celebrating him because he is an outstanding, and dynamic young man.” Eyitayo stressed.

She disclosed that 1,264 persons were inducted, adding that they have joined over 3 million global accounting professionals, under IFA.

Advising the inductees on the need to shorn corruption while practicing, the ICAN President   maintains that accuracy and integrity are not negotiable in the profession.

Earlier in his welcome address, Mallam Haruna Yahya, Chairman, Membership Affairs Committee, stated that the event was to admit new members, adding that the profession comes with responsibility and benefits.

In his keynote address, the special guest of honour, Alhaji Adebayo Owoyemi noted that though there are challenges facing all professions in the 21st century, but there are numerous opportunities to grow in accounting profession, especially for these young professionals.

Owoyemi disclosed that the success rate of young entrepreneurs in Nigeria is less than 5.0 percent, unlike the American counterparts whose success rate is in excess of 90 percent.

He advised the inductees on factors they must imbibe to succeed in the in the accounting profession.

According to him, theese includes, the appropriate use of time, stressing that time could be your best friend and your worst enemy.

Others are, hardwork, integrity, being careful in the choice of whom to marry, avoid being too optimistic about your future, and staying close to your God.
