Power generation drops to 2,401mw despite heavy rains

Despite the rainy season being at its peak, electricity generation yesterday (Saturday) dipped from 3,946.10Mw at 6:00hour to 2,401.30Mw at 12:00hour.

According to a document that our correspondent sighted in Abuja on the list of the Generation Companies (GenCos) and their Mw load at 6:00 on 03/09/22, 22 power plants were operational with 65 units.

At 13:00 the same day, the document which emanated from the Independent System Operator (SO) of the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), noted that only 13 plants were in operation with 35 units, recording a total generation of 2,401.30Mw.

The Nation sought to know why the power production declined at that hour from the Association of Power Generation Companies (APGC) Executive Secretary, Joy Ogaji via a phone call and text message but was yet to respond at the press time.

The data explained that Afam IV & V (Gas) produced 38:00Mw with one unit, Azura -Edo IPP (Gas) 427.00Mw three  and Egbin (Steam) output was 413.00Mw from three units.

At that period, Ibom Power (Gas) generated  25.30Mw with one unit, but with two units, Ihovbor NIPP (Gas)  recorded 0.0Mw while Jebba (Hydro) produced 399.00Mw with five units.

Besides, Olurunsogo (Gas) generated 120.80Mw with four units, Omoku (Gas) produced 48.10Mw with three units and Omotosho (Gas) produced 126.80Mw with four units.

The data added that Omotosho NIPP (Gas) produced 104.20Mw from one unit, Rivers IPP (Gas) generated 120.00Mw, Sapele (Steam) produced 35.00Mw with one unit.

It said Shiroro (Hydro) with four units produced 499.00Mw while  Trans Amadi (Gas) generated 45.10Mw.

The Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry (NESI) is not based only on the generation capacity, but also on load allocation to the electricity distributors, which is also a factor of what the DisCos are prepared to supply. It is not predicated on consumers’ demand.

Meanwhile, later at 14:00hour same day the 11 electricity Distribution Companies (DisCos) recorded 3,951Mw load allocation.

According to the document, Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) received 537Mw, Benin Electricity Distribution Company  (BEDC) recorded 328.00Mw and Eko Electricity Distribution Company received 474.00Mw.

The data said Enugu Electricity Distribution Company recorded 382.00Mw, Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company received 483Mw, while topping the chart, Ikeja Electricity Distribution Company got 565.00Mw.
