The Minister of Interior, Rauf Aregbesola, has described the proliferation of heavy and light weapons, porous borders, as well as the influx of illegal migrants as serious problems bedevilling the country.
According to him, one of the ways to curb the problems is through regional cooperation and collaborative efforts of the various security agencies in the country.
The minister who was represented by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, Dr. Shuaib Belgore, spoke while meeting with a delegation from the United Arab Emirates National Defence College, who were on a field study visit to the Ministry as part of their course work.
A statement on Thursday by the Ministry’s Director of Press, Afonja Ajibola, quoted the minister as assuring that Nigeria now had competent electronic border security architecture to effectively secure the country.
It partly read, “While listing proliferation of heavy and light weapons, porous borders and influx of illegal migrants into the country as serious challenges facing the country, he cited regional cooperation and collaboration of Nigeria with sister security agencies of neighbouring countries as one way of tackling the problem.
“The Permanent Secretary who represented the Minister used the opportunity to inform his August visitors that the Nigerian Immigration Service was now better equipped with advanced technology to curtail any security breach in our borders.
“According to him, such international partnership has contributed to renewed achievements of the Military assisted by other sister security agencies to decimate the terrorists.”
The leader of the delegation, Maheli Babi, made known the intention of their country to enter into a bilateral cooperation agreement with the Nigeria Defence College.
