Indian employee arraigned for stealing N32m from company

The Lagos State Police Command, on Friday, arraigned a 28-year-old man of Indian origin, Himanshu Joshi, before the Yaba Magistrates’ Court, in the Yaba area of the state.
Joshi, a manager at the Cash-n-Carry Nigeria Limited, was accused of stealing N32m belonging to his employer.
The defendant was arraigned before Magistrate O. Y. Adefope, who held brief for A. O. Salawu on one count of stealing.
The prosecutor, Magaji Haruna, holding a brief for Godwin Oriabure, told the court that the defendant committed the offence at Lenox Mall, Admiralty Way, Lekki Phase 1, Lagos State, between July 2022 and June 2023.
Magaji said the offence was punishable under Section 287 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, Nigeria, 2015.
The charge read, “That you, Himanshu Joshi, at the Lenox Mall, Admiralty Way, Lekki Phase 1, between July 2022 and June 2023, in the Lagos Magisterial District, did steal N32m, property of the Cash-n-Carry Nigeria Limited and thereby committed an offence punishable under Section 287 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, Nigeria, 2015.”
The defendant however pleaded not guilty to the charge. The defence counsel applied for bail in the most liberal terms.
The magistrate admitted him to bail in the sum of N3m and adjourned the case till August 10, 2023, for mention.
However, the defendant was unable to meet his bail terms and was remanded in prison custody.
It was gathered that Joshi did not have access to his phone which according to him had been seized by his company and did not have access to money to effect his bail.
