Senate, Akpabio dismiss impeachment plot, say lawmakers united

The Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, on Saturday described as malicious and untrue reports that there were plans to impeach him.
He said the Senate under his leadership was stable and harmonious and could not be distracted by “the innuendo of the merchants of political tar brush by what appears to be a syndicated media attack from outside the precincts of the National Assembly.”
Similarly, the Senate through its Committee on Media and Publicity described the report as a ruse, noting that “the Nigerian Senate is one united and fraternal family”.
There were media reports on Saturday that plans were underway to unseat Akpabio as the president of the 10th Senate when the Senate reconvenes on September 26.
The report also noted that two prominent senators from the North-West and other senators were already meeting and strategising how to unseat Akpabio. The reports also alleged that the senators believed that the Senate President was a rubber stamp and might be unable to carry out his duties effectively.
But a statement by Eseme Eyiboh, the Special Adviser (Media and Publicity) to the Senate president said the reports were “complete imaginations and sometimes laced with malice to achieve what senators are yet to comprehend.”
Eyiboh added, “Senators are presently concluding their holidays in their constituencies and other places they have chosen to spend their time after the rigours of the inauguration and ministerial screening and other constructive engagements.
“All senators are also refreshing themselves ahead of resumption, therefore any suggestions that they are presently engaged in other subversive plots against the institution is rather uncharitable. It is mostly uncharitable for those senators who initially did not support the emergence of the leadership but who have all unanimously endorsed the Senator Akpabio-led leadership. Continuing to link these senators with needless conspiracy with barely disguised innuendo is rather unkind.”
Also, in a statement on Saturday, the Senate spokesperson, Yemi Adaramodu, said, “This imaginative composition is in the realm of the fake and fallacious story of N100m per legislator. It’s apt to note that the 10th Senate, under the leadership of Senator Godswill Akpabio, has carried out its legislative and constitutional duties diligently.
“Within a span of less than 60 legislative days, the Senate has passed life-enhancing bills and motions. It has screened and confirmed service chiefs and ministers, among others, apart from very essential oversight functions.”
Adaramodu urged the peddlers of such information, whom he said were persons operating from outside the Senate, to halt their plans to cause disharmony through media stunts.
