Nigeria, Canada collaborate to decarbonize Nigeria’s oil and gas industry

By Emeka Ugwuanyi

Cabtree Consulting, a Nigerian company, the Gas Aggregation Company of Nigeria (GACN) and CarbonAi of Canada, have agreed to collaborate to decarbonize Nigeria’s oil and gas industry.
The event which holds on Thursday September 21, 2023, on the sideline of the ongoing World Petroleum Congress (WPC) in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, will give insights into how Canada was able to navigate decarbonisation of its oil and gas operations and how Nigeria can learn from it.
In a statement jointly issued by the representative of GACN, Tayo Rhodes-Vivour; Stephen Entwisle of Carbon Ai and Olabode Oma-Show of Cabtree Consulting, noted that the event will run from 14:30 to 19:30 at the Telus Convention Centre, which is few minutes drive from the WPC arena.
The event will feature speakers and panelists from government, regulatory and industry bodies in both countries, discussing how Nigeria can learn from Canada’s successes to date in decarbonizing oil and gas
operations, and how the two countries can collaborate to bring the same success to Nigeria’s oil and gas sector.
Discussions will feature such topics as: lessons learned in the Canadian experience; overcoming barriers in attracting investment; collaborative approaches; and capacity building, among others.
Related to the side event, CarbonAi was the hosting a social gathering for members of the Nigerian contingent, as well as representatives of Canadian government, regulators and industry, at the CarbonAi offices, from 17:00 to 19:00 on Wednesday, September 20. The evening allowed for some networking and also featured brief presentations on current and planned Nigeria-Canada collaborations.
Nigerian attendees at both events would have a chance to share their objectives, challenges and successes with Canadian industry experts and to learn more about regulations, technologies and practices that have been successfully implemented to reduce GHGs in Canadian oil and gas.
There will also be excellent opportunities for networking, brainstorming and partnership building. For high-ranking attendees, the event hosts will provide secure transport to and from each of the proposed events.
CarbonAi in Nigeria
Headquartered in Calgary, and with representative offices in London, Dubai and (soon) Lagos, CarbonAi provides full-cycle GHG reduction services, from project finance, design and construction, to the quantification, verification and sale of resulting emission reduction credits. It has also developed a cloud-based platform for the aggregation, quantification, verification and sale of GHG-reduction assets.
CarbonAi is focused on flare gas elimination projects in Africa, with a special focus on Nigeria. The company has finalized one project agreement in Nigeria, as well as an MoU with Oando Energy Resources and an MoU in principle with another indigenous producer.
CarbonAi Solutions has also completed an MoU with Oando Clean Energy to aggregate and manage data for an EV Bus pilot in Lagos.
CarbonAi’s climate dividend
For each project that CarbonAi develops, it invests a portion of carbon credit revenues to assist local organizations in developing sustainability initiatives – particularly small-scale renewable energy projects -through the CarbonAi Climate Dividend Programme. In October 2022, the company signed an MoU with the Rural Electrification Agency of Nigeria (REA) to finance and develop small-scale solar energy projects in unserved and underserved communities in that country.
