Members of the Nigerian Labour Congress in Delta on Tuesday took to the streets to protest against economic hardship.
During the protest, the workers demanded from the governor the whereabouts of their palliative from the federal government.
The protest started around 9 am amidst tight security.
Despite the tight security, there was free movement of vehicles even as banks, markets, and other business activities were in full operation without disturbance.
The NLC Deputy Chairman, Comrade Zicko Okwudi, who led the protest, said the protest was to press their demand following the hardship facing the people in the state.
Okwudi said, “We are here today to state our demand and to inform you of the situation in Nigeria. Things are hard on us.
“When you go to market you will see that the 30,000 minimum wage earlier approved does not take us home.
“We have come here today to bring our protest because a hungry man is an angry man”
The labour urged Oborevweri to put mechanisms in place to address the workers’ situation and should not wait for the Federal Government.
Addressing the protesters, the Secretary to the State Government, Kingsley Emu assured the workers that their message would be conveyed to the governor.
While commending their peaceful protest, Emu appealed that they should not allow their anger to destroy them.
“Please be calm, I know we are angry but do not allow your anger to consume you. Let us not get angry and destroy things because rebuilding is a problem”
The NLC protest is set to be held across the country for two days, Tuesday and Wednesday.
