The Bauchi State Government has evacuated 64 students of the University of Jos following the recent violence in Angwan Rukuba area of Jos, Plateau State.
The evacuation came after the unrest, which reportedly left about 27 people dead, prompting concerns over the safety of students in the area.
The state Commissioner for Higher Education, Hadiza Kango, disclosed this on Friday while receiving the students at the Government House in Bauchi.
She said the action followed a distress call from the President of the National Union of Bauchi State Students, Mohammed Suleiman, who alerted authorities that the students were trapped in their hostels.
She said, “My attention was drawn to the situation by the NUBASS President, Mohammed Suleiman. Immediately, he alerted me, I took action, and the government responded swiftly with full support and cooperation to rescue the students.”
Kango added that officials ensured the safe return of the students before handing them over to their parents and guardians.
“Education is very important. Their status as students informed our quick intervention. I am glad they stayed together, avoided trouble, and did not participate in the crisis. That shows responsibility. They should maintain this conduct and remain committed to their studies,” she added.
Also speaking, the student leader, Mohammed Abdulwahab, confirmed that buses and security personnel were deployed to evacuate the affected students back to Bauchi.
He commended the state government for what he described as a prompt response to the situation.
The Plateau crisis has heightened security concerns in Jos in recent days, with residents and institutions affected by the violence.
