Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has congratulated Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Oyinkansola Badejo-Okusanya, on her election as the 33rd President of the Nigerian Bar Association, describing her emergence as a historic milestone for the legal profession.
In a statement on Monday, the governor said Badejo-Okusanya’s emergence as the second female president in the history of the NBA was a testament to her decades of dedication, professionalism and commitment to the rule of law.
“Congratulations to Oyinkansola Badejo-Okusanya, SAN, on her historic election as the President of the Nigerian Bar Association.
“Becoming only the second female president in the history of the NBA is no small feat and is a well-deserved milestone.
“Over the years, she has built a reputation for excellence, legal precision and an unwavering commitment to the rule of law.
“Her rise to the leadership of the bar reflects decades of hard work and relentless dedication to justice,” Sanwo-Olu said.
The governor described her victory as a proud moment for the legal profession and an inspiration to young women across Lagos and Nigeria aspiring to occupy leadership positions.
According to him, he is confident that Badejo-Okusanya’s tenure will provide visionary leadership and further advance the cause of justice in the country.
“I have full confidence that her tenure will bring visionary leadership and advance the cause of justice in our society.
“On behalf of the Government and people of Lagos State, I wish her a successful and impactful term in office,” he added.
Badejo-Okusanya emerged victorious in the NBA’s 2026 national officers’ election after polling 12,317 votes, representing 47.18 per cent of the total votes cast, to defeat her closest challenger, Lateef Akangbe, SAN, who secured 7,934 votes, while Olumuyiwa Akinboro, SAN, garnered 5,855 votes.
Badejo-Okusanya will serve a two-year term from 2026 to 2028, succeeding outgoing President Afam Osigwe.
The first female NBA president was Priscilla Kuye, who led the association between 1991 and 1992.
