Defence minister inaugurates flood control projects in Niger

By Giwa SHILE

Minister of Defence, Brig. Gen. (rtd)) Mansur Dan Ali, on Monday inaugurated erosion and flood control projects executed at about N530 million in Magama local government area of Niger.

TBI Africa reports that among the projects was a bridge in Sabon Gari, which links about nine communities in the axis.

The projects were influenced by the member representing Magama /Rijau in the House of Representatives, Alhaji Shehu Saleh.

The minister said the bridge project was among the 18 ecological intervention projects approved by President Muhammadu Buhari for the six geopolitical zones across the country for the second quarter of 2018.

He said the project, which was completed in April was to ameliorate and control some of the most outstanding flood and erosion problems being experienced in the local government area of the state.

The Permanent Secretary of the Ecological Fund Office, (EFO) Dr Habiba Lawal, said the project was initiated through the request and appeal from Shehu Saleh, over the devastating effects of erosion and flood menace and the attendant adverse effects on the area.

The permanent secretary was represented by a Deputy Director in the office, Mr. Udochi Nwachukwu.

Lawal said the execution of the project, which commenced in June 2017, would go a long way in addressing the environmental degradation caused by erosion and flood in the area.

Sale, in his remarks, said constant deaths occasioned by yearly flood in his constituency spurred him to lobby for the ecological projects to stem the tide.

He promised to continue to pursue projects which have direct bearing on the people of his constituency and thanked President Muhammadu Buhari for approving the projects.
