Transformation of Nigeria’s economy will be achieved through commercial farming and the implementation of simple agricultural technology in subsistence farming.
Dr Sharon Brown, the President of Malku Institute of Technology, said this on Wednesday in Umuahia during the opening ceremony of the 2018 UN-Geneva Annual Conference tagged `National Transformation with Special Focus on Science,Technology and Food Security’.
The three-day event was organised by the Geneva Institute for Leadership and Public Policy, a UN non-governmental organisation, in partnership with the UN Institute for Training and Research and Abia Government.
Brown said that the global food crisis forecasted to occur in 2020 following a research, should be a wake up call to Nigerians.
She said that the agricultural revolution needed to boost development in Nigeria required not only legislation but also personal agreement among Nigerians interested in farming.
In his speech, Mr Paul Ndukwe, the Facilitator of the conference, said that the transformation call was more urgent now than ever before as global economy was focusing on Africa.
He noted that the continent was exploring developmental leadership models in order to achieve economic development.
“I believe that at the end of the conference, we will be transformed and develop durable paths to socio-economic transformation.”
In his remark, Mr Lee In-Tae, the South Korean Ambassador to Nigeria, said that knowledge-based contributions should complement the country’s potential.
In-Tae said that sustainable development could be achieved by emphasising on innovation and public private partnership among the citizens.
Earlier, Gov. Okezie Ikpeazu of Abia said that he was delighted with the areas that would be discussed during the conference.
Ikpeazu, who was represented by his deputy, Mr Ude Oko-Chukwu, said that he was confident that the conference would yield results that would make positive impact on Abia Government policies.
