Don urges FG to invest in local content development to boost economy

A don, Prof. Jonah Onuoha, has called on the Federal Government to encourage local content development, especially in the agricultural sector, to boost the economy after the Coronavirus (COVID-19) era.

Onuoha, Head of Political Science Department, University of Nigeria Nsukka, gave the advice in Abuja.

According to him, it is not out of place that many nations’ economy will enter recession due to global lockdown occasioned by COVID-19 pandemic.

“As a result of this, government must find ways to enhance local content production, especially in the agricultural sector, to boost the economy.

“The development of local content is the only way Nigeria can avoid recession because no economy can be sustained without production.

“Production is what distinct the poor from the rich; Nigeria must invest in local content development to boost production, particularly in agriculture, now that the rainy season has set in.

“People should be encouraged to farm because production of local content from agriculture is a way forward to escape recession.

“Federal Government must lay criteria for state governments to develop local contents; they must produce within specific timeframe, to achieve the desired goal,” he said.

The don also advised the Federal Government to create enabling environment to encourage the development of local content to promote industrialisation that would sustain the economy of the country.
