Forensic Science University Bill scales second reading

A Bill to establish the Forensic Science University of Nigeria, Erin–Ile, Kwara State has scaled second reading in the House of Representatives.

Titled, “A Bill for an Act to Establish Forensic Science University of Nigeria, Erin–Ile, Kwara State and to make Comprehensive Provisions for its Due Management and Administration; and for Related Matters (HB. 1754)”, it is sponsored by Rep. Tijani Ismail Kayode.

Kayode, who represents Ifelodun, Offa, Oyun federal Constituency in Kwara State, in his lead debate, said the Bill seeks to ensure the institution provides an education that can enhance forensic science and provide a sanitized forensic and audit sector.

This, he said, is to ensure due transparency and accountability in Nigeria is maintained.

“My respected colleagues, this is a very straightforward piece of legislation that seeks to establish the Forensic Science University of Nigeria to amongst other things: enhance Nigeria’s anti-fraud mechanisms through the provision of a legal framework for the study; development and discipline of forensic science; ensure equity and access to tertiary education in the country, make comprehensive provision for its management and administration with restricted programmes and limited and focused departments to aid the educational development and improvement of forensic science.

“In conclusion, Mr. Speaker, my respected colleagues, the emergence of forensic and investigative auditing in Nigeria has necessitated the urgent need to encourage forensic science education in Nigeria hence the importance of establishing a Forensic Science University cannot be overemphasised. I therefore urge my respected colleagues to support that this Bill be read for the second time and referred to the relevant committee for further legislative action,” he said.

The Bill was referred to the House Committee on Tertiary Education and Services for further legislative action.
