By Aliyu DANLADI

The management of the National Theatre(NT) complex in  Iganmu, Lagos State, says that it is doing its best to always provide security within the complex for their clients, visitors and revelers.

The General Manager (GM) of the complex, Dr Stella Oyedepo, disclosed this in Lagos.

She said that the security of artistes, visitors, revelers and workers of the complex was of topmost priority to the management.

The GM said that for the complex to achieve this, its management had secured the services of relevant security agencies to beef-up security in and around the complex.

Also, the agency’s Director of Planning, Research and Statistics Security, Dr  Doris Okafor, explained the efforts the new management was putting in place to combat insecurity in and around the theatre.

Okafor said that insecurity at the National Theatre complex had become a thing of the past, saying that security agents had been assigned to specific positions.

“Insecurity at the National Theatre has been arrested because we have engaged the services of policemen

“This time last year, we did not have any form of security, but the opposite is the case right now.’’

Okafor said that the management of NT had employed the services of armed policemen, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, night guards and police spies to provide security within the complex and its premises.

“All the gates are manned and right now, we have 12 armed policemen, 12 night guards, 12 civil defense officers and 10 spies providing security there.

“They are working together to make the complex a secured and habitable place for both staff and visitors.

“We have steady patrol vans for the police men and six motorcycles which will constantly be in use,” she said.

She said that the management of the complex was injecting funds into the project to ensure its success.

“We are totally in charge of everything because security is the first thing our clients look out for when they come for bookings,’’ she said.

She added that the complex had plans to have a shuttle service that would always transport people from the main gate to their destinations within the complex and vice-versa.

Also, the NT’s Director of Events, Mr ‘Biodun Abe, said that the management and staff of the complex were happy about the ongoing construction of the light rail project.

Abe said that with one of its stations within the National Theatre complex would assist in bringing positive change to it.

It would be recalled that then light rail project will link Lagos Island with Badagry when it commences operation.

Abe said that when the rail would begin operations, the train station within the Theatre complex would attract high human and vehicular traffic of passengers.

They would be those either alighting, boarding or waiting to board trains going either ways on daily basis, he said.

The director  said that the management of the complex would key-in into the advantage the rail transit would provide by creating relaxation centres for passengers waiting to board the rail.

He said that intending passengers would be able to use these non-conventional centres while waiting for the arrival of train.

“We need to cultivate our non-conventional venues inside the theatre complex where people that come to the train station can relax while in transit,” he said.

He also added that the management of the complex would establish a cultural village and gift shops at strategic locations within the complex where craft would be sold.

Abe also said that the management would construct a multi-layer car park where intending passengers could park their vehicles before boarding train.

He said that this was part of the plans the management would explore to generate more funds for the theatre.
