The UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF) in collaboration with partners trained 840 teachers in 210 primary schools in Sokoto State on “Promoting Safer Learning Environment Free of Violence.”
The Programme Consultant, Mrs Maryam Na’ibi, made this known on Monday at Ali Fodio Primary School in Bodinga Local Government Area during 2018 World Largest Lesson event tagged “End Violence in and Around Schools,” which is part of the initiative.
Na’ibi said 35 focus primary schools were selected in six local government areas while head teachers of the schools, along with class 4, 5, 6 teachers were trained on the initiative.
She said the benefiting local government areas comprised Kebbe, Bodinga, Binji, Gudu, Wurno and Goronyo
She explained that the programme was part of global education initiative conducted every year toward achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
According to her, the programme aims to ensure quality education, safe, non violent environment in all forms.
The Local Education Secretary of Bodinga Local Government Area, Alhaji Nuruddini Malami, described the programme as beneficial as it promote safety of children and enhance relationships.
Malami urged stakeholders to consider expanding the programme to other primary schools across the state.
According to him, the programme impacted positively on learning conditions and continues responsive actions in educational environments.
The children were grouped and mentored on ways to protect themselves, discuss and identify ways on general violence with burning issues affecting school environment.
The programme started on Oct. 2, and will end on Nov. 20, 2018
