The President of the Karate Federation of Nigeria (KFN) Mr Silas Agara, has said that plans are underway to introduce karate into Nigerian schools.
Agara, who is the Deputy Governor of Nasarawa State disclosed this to newsmen in Lafia on Tuesday.
According to him, the move is aimed at incorporating Karate into Nigerian academic curriculum, thereby making Nigerian youths more interested in it.
“Many of our youths still don’t know a lot about the sport.
“So, our plan is to introduce it in secondary schools and tertiary institutions so as to inform them about karate.
“Hopefully, after that some will show interest and embrace it as their favourite sport.
“If that happens, Nigeria will be the biggest beneficiary as we will have more youths interested in the sport.
“Some of those who show interest will join others already in the sport to represent the country in karate competitions in Africa and across the globe,” he said.
He added that another reason for the plan to introduce Karate in the nation’s secondary and tertiary institutions was to develop the culture of self-defence in the younger generation.
“This would be most desiring for those who want to make a career in the army, police and other para-military organisations,’’ he said.
He also said the federation was prepared to feature prominently in the upcoming National Sports Festival and other international sports fiestas including the All African games and the Olympics.
