Osinbajo encourages patronage of indigenous content and technology

By Giwa SHILE

Vice President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, on Wednesday, stressed the importance of patronising indigenous content and technology, to promote human development.

Osinbajo made this known in Akure during the Development Partners Summit, and the re-launch of Ondo State Education Endowment Fund (OSEEF).

Represented by Dr Isa Pantami, Director-General, National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), Osinbajo explained that human development was important and all tiers of government must ensure that citizens were involved in the process.

“This is one of the reasons why the Federal Government is interested and passionate about promoting our indigenous content and technology.

“Whatever we do, we make sure we give priority to what we can produce in our communities.

“Let us make sure that we utilise our potentials effectively. It is good for us to patronise what we develop and develop what we need.

“The Federal Government commends Ondo State Government on efforts in area of human development and we are ready to support you to achieve whatever is discussed here,” he said.

The Vice President also said development in many developing nations, Nigeria included, suffered from the dual disease of over-exposure and under-implementation.

“While over-exposure is talking too much about development, under-implementation is where we do less, which means that we talk more than what is required but find it difficult to implement whatever was said.

He commended Akeredolu for implementing policy developed and pointed out that the summit was a clear indication that he was willing to convert his words into action.

Earlier, Gov. Oluwarotimi Akeredolu of  Ondo State said his administration would continue to put in place investor-friendly regulatory environment, which would allow the private sector to thrive.

He explained that the administration was committed to strengthening partnership and investment opportunities for the growth and development of the state.

“Ondo has the potential to be a key player in the economy of the South West region of Nigeria by virtue of its human and natural endowments.

“It is imperative that we re-engineer the economy and place it on a trajectory of sustained growth.

“To achieve this, our administration understands the fact that sustainable development can be achieved through robust partnership.

“Therefore, our focus is to ensure rapid growth, development and sustainability of the economy,” he said.

The governor also explained that the summit sought to create a platform for partnership with key players in both private and public sectors, to mobilise resources for engendering economic growth and development of the state.

Also, Mr Hamidou Poufon, Chief, Social Policy Unit, United Nations International Childrens Emergency Fund (UNICEF) Nigeria, said the organisation believed in the right of every child to good health care and education, to realise their full potentials.

“To combat the challenges that face the well-being of the child in Ondo State, there is an urgent need to improve food and nutrition security, enhance livelihoods, increase access to water and sanitation and increase access to universal health coverage.

“As a child rights advocate, UNICEF firmly believes in investing in children both as a fundamental responsibility and an opportunity, without which development will always remain incomplete,” he said.

Similarly, Oba Enitan Ogunwusi, the Ooni of Ife, said the state had the potential to generate and bring on board over five hundred companies in the next two years.

He further said currently, Ondo State had the longest and deepest coastal line and potential landmass in Nigeria and was the closest in terms of proximity to Lagos, which had continued to witness rapid development.
