Some lawmakers in the Lagos State House of Assembly on Tuesday urged President Muhammadu Buhari to prioritise security and electricity in his second term.
TBI Africa said the lawmakers, who spoke in separate interviews with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos, however, noted that the President had laid solid foundations for the progress of the country which must continue.
According to them, improvement in security and stable power supply are cardinal to grow a prosperous nation.
Mr Victor Akande (APC-Ojo I) at the Assembly said:` `The most paramount issue clamouring for national attention is the security of lives and property of Nigerians.
“We need to give security more attention. If the President can set it as his topmost agenda and achieve this, it will do us a lot of good.
“Necessary actions must be taken in this tenure to end all gruesome killings. I think the President needs to declare a state of emergency in security sector.’’
Akande, the Chairman, House Committee on Science and Technology, urged the President to do everything within his power to end insecurity.
He said that this would bring back investors that had run away from the country over insecurity, which would provide jobs for the teeming unemployed.
Akande said that Buhari’s second term must address issue of epileptic power supply, that had sent away many companies and increased youth unemployment.
The lawmaker, who added that epileptic power had also sent best brains in Nigeria away, called on the President to encourage industralisation to raise standard of living.
On Buhari’s next cabinet, Akande called for sound minds, best brains, experts, technical and versatile people in different professions.
In the same vein, Mr Segun Olulade, member representing Epe Constituency II at the House, said that the focal agenda for the President should be the issue of electricity, youth employment and security.
Olulade said: “I think President Muhammadu Buhari needs to address this issue of electricity for us to develop. By now, we should be celebrating uninterrupted power supply.
“I wish that the President continue the drive for infrastructural development. Buhari must look into youth unemployment and create jobs for people and open the economic net.
“The President must look critically into the area of security. His fight against corruption must continue. We are not there at all as far as health sector is concerned.’’
The lawmaker, a former Chairman, House Committee on Healthcare Services, said that the health sector lacked infrastructure and equipment while primary health centres were not strengthened.
Also speaking, Mr Jude Idimogu, the Chairman, House Committee on Commerce, Industry and Cooperative, urged the President to strengthen his economic growth plan and economic diversification.
Idimogu, representing Oshodi-Isolo Constituency II, said that the President should continue his policies like active fight against corruption and diversification of the economy.
He said that railway and road network linking major cities together should be worked on for economic development.
“On security, I will advise the President to change the service chiefs. We need fresh ideas to tackle the menace of insecurity.
“New and younger people should be given opportunity. I think we need a different tactic entirely to combat insecurity.’’
NAN reports that President Buhari will, on Wednesday, commence his second term in office as the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Nigeria.
