FRSC Lagos sector command committed to reducing road traffic crashes in Lagos.

The Sector Commander of the FRSC Lagos Sector Command, Corps Commander Olusegun Ogungbemide restated the Corps commitment to reducing the spate of road traffic crashes in Lagos State. He made this known during a courtesy call to the Major Oil Marketers Association of Nigeria in Victoria Island, Lagos on Wednesday 17th March 2021. He was accompanied by some Senior Officers of the Command; ACC Nimota Okoro, SRC Maxwell Egbotan and RC Olabisi Sonusi. On hand to receive the FRSC team on behalf of MOMAN was Clement Isong (CEO, MOMAN), Oyet Gogomary (OVH Energy Marketing Limited), Ajibola Alaga (Total Nigeria Plc), Mahmud Mohammed (Ardova Plc), Olalekan Odusanya (11 Plc), Olusegun Ogunnoiki (OVH Energy Marketing Limited), Arthur Igboanugo (MRS Oil Nigeria Plc) and Olise Wakwe (MOMAN).

Corps Commander Ogungbemide identified MOMAN as a key collaborator and stakeholder for the Corps and thanked the members of MOMAN for their support towards tackling the various issues concerning tankers plying Nigerian roads hauling petroleum products. He narrated happenings from his first few months in Lagos, noting how difficult it was to settle in with all the frequent road traffic crashes. He stated that he had met with the Ports Authority to reduce issues from the port end, ensuring that flatbed trucks are properly latched on thereby reducing incidents of containers falling on other road users. On the issue of leaking tankers on Lagos roads, he mentioned that in the interim the installation of safety valves should reduce the risks of petroleum products leaking and rollover spills.

During FRSC on the spot inspections, the Corps discovered that most trucks have brake system failure. He added that the Corps was trying to combat that at the moment. In closing, he thanked MOMAN CEO for the logistics support MOMAN members extend to the Corps and asked that the Association do more to ease the logistical burden on the Corps stating that the Government could not do it all alone.

In his response, the MOMAN CEO, Mr. Clement Isong reminded the Corps Commander that MOMAN deliberately decided to collaborate with FRSC noting that the collaboration was strategic, he also added that the FRSC remains a key partner to MOMAN. He told the Corps Commander that with deliberate action, results could be positive adding that Total Nigeria Plc had gone 4 years without a fatality, a point that was corroborated by the Total Nigeria Plc Representative, Mr. Ajibola Alaga. Mr. Alaga also added that trucks with the right equipment are not meant to rollover easily, noting that modern equipment and driver training can flatten the curve drastically.

The MOMAN CEO requested that MOMAN set up a joint task force with FRSC to check MOMAN transporters to ensure that only road worthy trucks carry petroleum products on our roads. The task force were also charged with providing a training plan to train MOMAN & eventually industry fleet drivers.

The FRSC/MOMAN joint task force will ensure that teething issues are solved amicably on the field with ease and efficiency.

In 2020, despite constraints caused by the pandemic, MOMAN synergized with the FRSC to ensure road transport safety. A conference to sensitize transporters to invest in trucks that meet the standards to transport safely dangerous goods was organized. MOMAN also provided technical support on Safe-To-Load (STL) enforcement at loading depots, training FRSC officials.  MOMAN supports the Corps with logistics to ease motorized patrols.
