Firemen avert disaster as PMS laden tanker falls at Costain

Firemen of the Federal and Lagos State Fire Services on Tuesday afternoon averted a calamity after a tanker loaded with Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) fell and spilt its content at Costain, Iponri.

The tanker fell around 2pm while ascending the bridge and residents around Iponri trooped out to scoop petrol which spilled ion the road and into drainages.

It was gathered that before the tanker fell, it rolled backwards and hit a saloon car.

To prevent an explosion, firemen who immediately raced to the scene cordoned off all access roads and started blanketing the PMS.

They also sent messages across the neighbourhood urging people to avoid lighting naked fires or doing anything that could cause an inferno.

Reacting to the incident, Director, Lagos Fire Service, Mrs. Margaret Adeseye, urged the public to avoid combustible materials without the vicinity to prevent secondary incident.

Permanent Secretary (PS), Dr. Femi Oke-Osanyintolu, said transloading of the product to another tanker was ongoing, urging the public to avoid the area and refrain from scooping of products.

“Residents should avoid lighting any naked flame until the situation has been fully contained. The sgency’s Supermetro is enroute to complete the operation,” he said.
