Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, on Saturday visited the Festac-Alakija Bridge for an on-the-spot assessment of sections of the structure damaged by suspected vandals.
According to a statement shared via X.com by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Media and Publicity, Mr Gboyega Akosile, the Governor was accompanied on the inspection by contractors handling the facility, members of the State Executive Council and local government chairmen, who joined him in evaluating the extent of the damage to the bridge.
After the assessment, Sanwo-Olu assured residents that the bridge remained structurally sound, even as he issued a stern warning to those behind the vandalism and their patrons.
“The Governor assured residents of the sound integrity of the bridge,” he said.
The Governor said the full weight of the law would be brought to bear on the vandals as well as buyers of vandalised government property, and urged members of the public to steer clear of such unscrupulous practices.
“He however warned that the full weight of the law would be brought upon vandals and buyers of vandalised govt property, urging people to desist from unscrupulous practices,” he said.
The visit comes days after Sanwo-Olu had ordered security agencies to track down and prosecute those responsible for vandalising the bridge, describing the act as a criminal assault on public infrastructure.
A viral video had earlier shown extensive damage to sections of the bridge, with parts of the concrete pillars broken open and reinforcing steel bars stripped out, an act blamed on suspected scavengers.
PUNCHONLINE had reported that no fewer than 27 suspected hoodlums were subsequently arrested in connection with the vandalism of the bridge linking Festac Town to Alakija, following the Governor’s directive to security agencies.
