Experts in the maritime industry have lamented job losses and low activities in ship chandling in the maritime sector.

In a chat with journalists in Lagos, they said that over 95perecent ship chandlers were currently out of job.

A former ship chandler, Mr Felix Anya-Benson, said that foreigners had taken over the sector.

“Ninety-five per cent of chandlers are no longer in the business due to financial burdens and lack of support from the government to compete with the foreigners.”

Also speaking, the founder of the National Council of Managing Director of Licensed Customs Agents, Lucky Amiwero, said that the sector was not booming the way it used to.

“Ship chandling business  now is not booming as it used to be for the local chandlers.”

He urged the government to intervene in and  support the sector.
