NPA lauds union over workers’ pay rise
The Management of the Nigerian Ports Authority has commended the Maritime Workers’ Union of Nigeria for its support and role in the process of securing approval for an increment in the salaries of its workers for the first time since 2008.
In 2022, the MWUN raised the alarm that salaries of workers of NPA had not been increased for over a decade. This led to the announcement of a pay rise by the Minister of Transportation, Sambo Mu’azu Sambo, in January.
In a statement issued on Monday, the Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer, NPA, Mohammed Bello Koko, was quoted as saying, “Breaking the jinx of salary stagnation suffered for over a decade by the Authority’s employees was made possible with the support of the MWUN, and we remain appreciative. This critical support from MWUN has buoyed us to intensify our relentless drive towards continuous improvement in the welfare of our esteemed workers in ways not limited to monthly salary alone.”
Koko said this as he received a letter referenced MWUN/MD/NPA/RFC/23 dated 6th March, 2023 signed by the Secretary General MWUN expressing appreciation to the management of the authority for the increment in the salary of its members.
He added, “We are further delighted by the fact that our own Comrade Adewale Adeyanju is now the Deputy President of the NLC, this gives us the necessary solidarity and backing to push for more benefits for our highly valued human resources.”
The NPA managing director was in November 2022 accompanied by the President General MWUN, Adeyanju, to pay an advocacy visit to the headquarters of the Nigerian Labour Congress to solicit the NLC’s support in efforts to increase NPA workers’ salaries
