In a meeting with the newly elected executive members of the organised labour unions in Imo State, Governor Hope Uzodimma reiterated his administration’s commitment to working collaboratively with labour leaders.
Receiving the union officials at the Government House on Monday, Governor Uzodimma congratulated them on their appointments and expressed his willingness to support them in defending the interests of workers across the state.
“We are better off working as a team. There is better understanding now,” Uzodimma stated, addressing past misunderstandings with the national labour leadership.
A statement on Monday by the chief press secretary and media adviser to the governor, Oguwike Nwachuku, noted that the governor also accepted the Organised Labour’s request to host their annual convention in Imo State later this year, promising to make it a memorable event surpassing previous conventions held elsewhere.
Uzodimma acknowledged the leadership of Uche Nwigwe, chairman of the Imo State labour unions, calling for unity and moderation among the leaders. “Work together, reduce your greed and increase your tolerance,” he advised.
In his remarks, Nwigwe thanked the governor for his generosity towards workers, citing initiatives such as free transportation, free medical care, civil service reform, prompt salary and pension payments, worker promotions, and the recent commitment to paying gratuities to retirees.
Nwigwe assured Uzodimma of a willingness to work with the governor to achieve the desired peace for Imo State, extending an invitation to the governor to attend the Workers’ Day celebrations on May 1, which he described as “the workers’ own Christmas.”
The meeting was also attended by Secretary to the State Government Chief Cosmos Iwu, Chief of Staff Barr. Nnamdi Anyaehie, and other top government officials.
