Lagos Govt. commends youth council on tax reform bill education
The Lagos State Commissioner for Youth and Social Development, Mobolaji Ogunlende, has commended the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) for sensitising youths on the tax reform bill.
Ogunlende gave the commendation at the Lagos Youth Talk series held at the Akinwunmi Ambode Youth Centre, in Lagos.
The Lagos Youth Talk series is a conversation geared to galvanise change, with the theme “Tax Reform Bills: Understanding the Gains.”
Ogunlende said the talk series converged over 150 youth leaders across the 57 local governments and local council development areas.
According to him, Lagos champions an inclusive government, noting that the ongoing national tax reform conversation will leave no Lagos youths behind.
Ogunlende urged the youth leaders to cascade knowledge gained at the talk series to youths in their constituencies and communities.
Similarly, Mr Ibrahim Adigun, Chairman of the Lagos State Chapter of NYCN, noted that the tax reform bill would create employment and engagement opportunities for citizens.
Adigun said the talk series targeted various youth organisations, with all ethnic groups represented at the meeting.
He said the talk series would be held every quarter to educate youths on topical issues, advising youths to be agents of change.
Commenting, Dr Jimoh Saka, Associate Professor of the Economics Department at Lagos State University, said the issue of the tax system was not new.
Saka, a guest speaker, said the tax reform bill would be beneficial to citizens, advising the public to give the bill a fair chance.
On her part, Ms Damilola Ojebode, Manager, KPMG Tax Advisory Services, commended the talk series, noting that it was a veritable platform for youths to express their views for national development.
Ojebode, who was also a guest speaker, said the tax reform bill had sparked various conversations, adding that youths needed to understand the bill.
A participant, Mr Azeez Agboola, Mushin Youth Council Leader, said the talk series had improved his knowledge about the bill, pledging to transfer the knowledge to youths in his community.
