The Lagos State Vehicle Inspection Service has impounded over 200 rickety vehicles in its fight against unroadworthy cars and buses operating in the state.
This was made known in a statement made available to journalists on Sunday.
Recall that the VIS had recently sounded a note of warning to owners of rickety vehicles in the state, saying they were the cause of the majority of auto crashes recorded in Lagos.
In April, the VIS had said several dilapidated vehicles had been impounded across Lagos for failing to meet safety standards.
The service described the vehicles’ condition as “ticking time bombs,” citing expired tyres, weak brakes, and rusted body parts as major hazards.
In the latest statement, the Director VIS under the Ministry of Transportation in the state, Akin-George Fashola, noted that the seizures were made during recent enforcement and promised that the battle against rickety vehicles would continue.
According to the statement, the large-scale operation, which targeted vehicles operating across the state, focused significantly on commercial minibuses, including the popular Danfos and Korope vehicles often cited as major contributors to road accidents in Lagos.
Fashola clarified that the enforcement was not limited to private vehicles, contrary to public perception.
He said, “This operation applies to all categories of vehicles within Lagos’ transport ecosystem,” stressing the need for all vehicles, especially those intended for commercial use, to comply with roadworthiness standards.
He urged vehicle owners to conduct inspections at VIS annexe offices before putting vehicles into commercial operation.
“Before commercialising your vehicle, make sure it is fit for the road,” he advised.
He further affirmed the directorate’s commitment to sustaining the enforcement drive as part of broader efforts to enhance road safety and ensure a more efficient transport system across Lagos State.
