The Sokoto State Coordinator of People Living With HIV/AIDS, Malam Hussaini Gwadabawa, on Thursday called on governments to organise vocational training for victims of the virus to curtail its spread.
Gwadabawa made the recommendation at the HIV/AIDS summit organised by the Civil Society for HIV/AIDS (CiSHAN) to commemorate this year’s HIV/AIDS day.
The theme of the seminar was “Towards a Coordinated HIV/AIDS Response in Sokoto State”.
Gwadabawa said female victims were spreading the disease for lack of businesses to fall back on after they were tested positive.
“Some are left with children to cater for and they do not have the means other than to engage in sex business.
“But if the government provides them with skills and capital, it will go a long way in curtailing the spread of the disease,” he said.
Dr Ali Inname, the state Commissioner for Health, pledged that the government would continue to support people living with HIV in the state.
On his part, the Chairman of CiSHAN, Alhaji Bashir Hussain, advised the people of the state to go for HIV testing in order to know their status.
