Shaibu makes history, wins Edo 2020 gold

Edo State Deputy Governor Philip Shaibu on Monday entered the history books as the country’s first major political office holder to win a football gold medal at the National Sports Festival, after leading Team Edo to a 3-2 win over Team Lagos in the final of the men’s football event of the 20th edition in Benin City.

Shaibu, who is also the Chairman, Local Organising Committee of the festival, came on with five minutes left to play, with Edo leading, and helped protect the scoreline, following a late onslaught by their opponents.

Team Edo came from two goals down to beat Lagos, with Solomon Osagie grabbing the winner from the penalty spot in the 76th minute in the final encounter played at the sports complex of the University of Benin.

There were loud cheers as Shaibu warmed up before he was brought on in the 85th minute.

Speaking after the game, the Deputy Governor said, “I’m excited that Team Edo won, but for me, it is Lagos and Team Edo that won because it is a unity game. Both teams were very tactical and good. From two goals down, my boys equalised and went on to win with the God of football on our side.”
