Governor Aminu Tambuwal of Sokoto State on Monday challenged National Youth Service Corp (NYSC) members and other youths to maximally explore economic potentialities of the country.
Tambuwal made call at the closing of 2018 batch `A’ NYSC orientation camp in Sokoto State and urged corps members posted to the state to freely mingle in the communities as well as engage actively in activities that contribute to economic development in the state.
The Governor, represented by the Head of Service, Dr Abubakar Bello, urged corps members to also strive towards eradicating poverty, fight against corruption, drug abuse and other social vices.
He urged them to consider themselves agents of change.
Tambuwal assured them of government’s support for any economic and development projects initiated by the corps members, adding that entrepreneurial skills obtained during the orientation should be utilised to impact positively on host communities.
According to him, in spite of security challenges, Sokoto State enjoyed relative peace.
He urged corp members to interact freely, while reiterating government’s commitment to partner with security agencies on safeguarding lives and properties.
In his address, the state NYSC Board Chairman, Alhaji Abubakar Ladan, urged the corps members to be of good conduct in their host communities and challenged them to ensure they get some of the available awards of recognition during their service year.
He said mechanisms were put in place to facilitate meaningful participation in community development projects in the state.
The State NYSC Coordinator, Mr Philip Eneberue, said corps members underwent various skills training aimed at encouraging self-reliance and to be part of Federal Government’s effort to facilitate economic development.
Enuberue said 95 per cent of corps members deployed to the state were posted to teach in schools, to complement government’s efforts in the education sector.
He said in support of government’s resolve to improve the lot of rural dwellers, 75 per cent of the medical doctors and other medical professionals were posted to rural communities.
The coordinator urged corps members to exhibit religious tolerance and ethnic understanding in the communities, initiate programmes that would have direct bearing on human development in line with the dreams of NYSC founding fathers.
