U.S. has no plans to suspend more military exercises with South Korea

By Giwa SHILE

The U.S. will not suspend any further Military exercises with South Korea, Secretary of Defence Jim Mattis, said on Tuesday.

Even though the exact plans going forward still need to be worked out with diplomats, “We have no plans at this time to suspend any more exercises,’’ Mattis told reporters at the Pentagon.

He noted that some exercises had been suspended as a measure of “good faith’’ around the Singapore summit between U.S. President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong UN.

Trump earlier ordered Secretary of State Mike Pompeo to cancel his visit to North Korea, citing a lack of progress on the nuclear issue.

Mattis declined to comment when asked if he concurred with Trump’s tweet from right after the Singapore summit in which he said Pyongyang was no longer a threat.

“You are asking for a straightforward answer on a complex subject,’’ Mattis said.
