French Police Union vows day without fines for petrol price protest

By Giwa SHILE

French motorists infuriated by rising fuel prices may save some money soon, as one of the biggest Police Unions on Wednesday promised a day without fines.

The move would coincide with planned protests against petrol and diesel prices on Nov. 17, Yves Lefebvre of the Unite SGP Police FO union told broadcaster BFMTV.

“We’re always hearing about how the police should be closer to the people,’’ Lefebvre said. “We’ll get closer to the people, we’ll act in solidarity with our fellow citizens, and Nov.17, there will be zero fines handed out by members of Unite SGP Police’’.

Fuel prices in France have been rising due to a combination of oil price movements on international markets and tax increases.

A petition on website change.org against the tax rises has got more than 790,000 supporters.

Another website lists more than 400 blockades and protests supposedly being organised on Nov. 17.
