The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) on Friday, in Kano, said it would build a workshop in Kumbotso Substation, Kano, to service and repair faulty transformers.
Mr Usman Muhammed, TCN Managing Director, disclosed this after inspecting the newly repaired Kumbotso Substation’s 150MVA Transformer.
Mohammed said that the transformer, which got burnt five years ago, was repaired and energised by the company’s in-house engineers.
“This is the first time TCN engineers successfully undertook such repair work on a burnt 150MVA capacity power transformer and restored it to service.
“This is an indication of the growing capacity of TCN engineers under the current administration.
Mohammed said the Kumbotso Transmission Substation, initially had four 150MVA power transformers.
“Five years ago, one of the transformers got burnt and was considered irreparable; and on Jan. 1, 2018, a second 150MVA tripped off due to malfunction,” he said.
He said the successful repair of the power transformer had increased the capacity of the substation and restored the number of functional 150MVA power transformers to three.
According to him, TCN has equally mobilised a new 150MVA power transformer from Lagos port, which is currently in Lokoja, en route Kumbotso Substation.
He said: “TCN can now supply normal bulk power to Dakata transmission Substation and Kano distribution load centers, taking supply from the substation to Katsina, Kankia, and environs.”
The managing director stressed that the TCN remained committed to expanding its network and maintaining existing infrastructure in the transmission grid.
According him, the company spent N11 million on the repairs of the transformer instead of the N25 million proposed by contractors in Lagos.
Mohammed also added that TCN would promote the engineers that repaired the capacity transformer and give commendation letters to those who also contributed in the repair.
He noted that the company was implementing the Transmission Rehabilitation and Expansion Programme of the Federal Government, in line with international best practices.——-NAN
