House: hold Executive responsible for tariffs hike

The House of Representatives on Wednesday urged Nigerians to hold the Executive responsible for the non-implementation of the House resolution seeking a halt of any increase on electricity tariff.

Its spokesman, Hon. Benjamin Kalu, told The Nation on phone that the principles of checks and balances as contained in the constitution does not allow the legislature to interfere in the implementation of resolutions passed by the House.

He said: “We have passed a resolution which is how the House operate. That is to show that we are sensitive to the cries of the Nigerian people. This is reflected in the motions and resolutions we reach in the House which represents the desires and hunger of the people on a particular issue because we are the people’s parliament.

“Once we have done that, we have exhausted the expectations of the people and our constitutional mandate which means that the ball passes from our own arm of government to the next arm of government which in this case is the Executive. We have discharged our responsibility by tolerating or listening or accommodating the motion introduced before the House by members who introduced them.

“There have been motions on this tariff increase. If the House had thrown such motions away, then it would mean that we are insensitive to the plight of the people. The House accommodated it, debated it and passed a resolution on them. That means that we have carried out our constitutional mandate.”
