Lagos partners AfDB to boost power supply in Lekki, environs

The Lagos State Government has said it has partnered with African Development Bank to improve electricity supply to Lekki, Ibeju and adjoining communities.

The Commissioner for Energy and Mineral Resources, Mr Olalere Odusote, said this in a statement by the Assistant Director of Public Affairs of the ministry, Mr Idowu Adetola, on Thursday.

Odusote was quoted to have said this during an interactive session held by the Lagos State Electricity Cooperatives and AfDB at the secretariat of Lekki Local Council Development Area.

He said, “The Lagos State Electricity Cooperatives with the African Development Bank will fast track the supply of electricity to unreached areas (Lekki, Ibeju and environs) within the council.

The beneficiaries are expected to enter into a cooperative arrangement for convenient repayment plan through the Eko Electricity Distribution Company. “This is to extend power supply, including the provision of pre-paid meters, to residents of the area within the shortest possible time without putting unnecessary burden on the beneficiaries of the gesture.”

The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, Ms Sholabomi Shasore, said, “The stakeholders’ session was organised to seek the buy-in of the Ibeju and Lekki residents into the new cooperative initiative. I want to assure you all that these resolutions will not just be looked into, but actions will also be expedited on them.”

The council chairman, Ibeju Lekki Local Government Area, Mr Abdullahi Olowa, noted that the electricity cooperative model, which was the first of its kind, needs the full support of residents with the cooperation of both the local and state governments to be effective.
