Outgoing voice call accounts for 8% revenue from Nigeria, says Airtel

Airtel Africa yesterday said outgoing voice revenues for active subscribers who are unlinked to the NIN account for about eight per cent of total revenue from Nigeria and about three per cent of total revenues for the group.

This is a further update by the company after the recent order from the regulators to suspend outgoing calls from unlinked SIMs to NIN. The real figure could not be ascertained as efforts to reach the spokesperson, Mr. Emeka Opara, as at press time was abortive.

A chat sent through the Botim app to him in Dubai even though it was delivered and read there was no response as at press time.

It would be recalled that the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) said with effect from 4 April 2022, all SIMs that have not been linked to NIN will have their outgoing voice calls barred with immediate effect.

Airtel said it will continue to work closely with the regulator and will make every effort to minimize disruption and ensure affected customers can continue to benefit from full-service connectivity as soon as possible.

In line with their aim to drive increased connectivity and digital inclusion across Nigeria, Pier Falcione, the investor relations officer, Airtel Africa, said subscribers of such lines can still link their SIMs to their NINs in order that these restrictions can be lifted. Customers are, therefore, being given a final opportunity to fully comply with the latest registration requirements.
