280 Killed, 1000 injured in India train accident

*Tinubu commiserates with Prime Minister, government of India
Not less than 288 people have been confirmed dead and more than 1,000 injured in an accident involving three trains in the city of Balasore, in eastern Odisha state, on Friday.
Indian officials described the tragic incident which occurred around 7pm on Friday as India’s worst rail accident in over two decades.
India’s president, Droupadi Murmu shared a tweet saying “Deeply anguished to know about the loss of lives in an unfortunate rail accident in Balasore, Odisha. My heart goes out to the bereaved families. I pray for the success of rescue operations and quick recovery of the injured”.
Pradeep Jena, the chief secretary in the state of Odisha said 24 Fire Service Units, local police and volunteers are working tirelessly in search and rescue.
India, a nation of 1.4 billion, transports 13 million passengers every day, and 8 billion annually.
Meanwhile, President Bola Tinubu has commiserated with the government and people of India over the tragic incident.
In a statement from the presidency, President Tinubu sent a message of commiseration to the government and people of the Republic of India over a multiple train crash in the country which killed over 280 passengers.
In the statement, Tinubu described the train accident as heartrending, while consoling the Indian government and families of the victims.
“My heart goes to the families of those affected in the unfortunate and heartrending train crash in the Indian state of Odisha.
“We stand with India in brotherhood at this difficult time. The magnitude of the crash and the high casualty figure call for global support for India to adequately respond to this calamitous accident.
“I send my deepest sympathy and condolences to His Excellency Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the people of India and the families of those trapped in the crash,” the president said.
LEADERSHIP reports that the fatal crash involved three trains in the Indian city of Balasore, in the eastern state of Odisha.
Aside those killed, over 1000 others were injured in what was one of the worst rail crashes in recent history.
