NGO trains 15 journalists on sexual ,gender based violence in Lagos

Good Women Association (GWA), an NGO, has trained 15 journalists in Lagos on Sexual and Gender Based Violence (SGBV).

Speaking at the opening ceremony of the two-day training, Ms Biola Ibiefo, Executive Director, GWA, said that the training was a significant step in addressing pressing issues of SGBV.

Ibiefo said that the training was aimed at empowering participating journalists with the knowledge and tools to combat SGBV problems.

“The media has a responsibility to help counter bias, stereotypes and general misinformation that stand in the place of accuracy about the circumstances of sex work and the people that engaged in it.

“The rights to life, safety, access to information and to basic health and education services are as important to sex workers as to anyone else,” she said.

The Executive Director said that the training was supported by ISDAO Love Alliances.

It would be recalled that GWA is a woman-led organisation that provides services for vulnerable women and adolescent girls/children with the goal of empowering women and creating awareness intervention programmes in Lagos.

The training empowered the 15 journalists on sessions from experts on understanding SGBV, types, forms and impacts.

The session also trained the journalists on laws and policies addressing SGBV, interviewing survivors with sensitivity, as well as reporting challenges and solutions, overcoming stigma and bias while reporting.
