Centre trains 24 female students on online gender-based violence reportage

The Centre for Information Technology and Development (CITAD) says it has trained 24 female students of tertiary institutions in Jigawa on how to report Gender Based Violence Online (GBVO).

The state Programme Coordinator of the Centre, Malam Ali Sabo, made this in Dutse on Sunday.

Sabo said the beneficiaries were drawn from Federal University Dutse (FUD) and Jigawa State Polytechnic (JSP).

He explained that the gesture was to reduce gender-based violence online and digital divide in Northern states.

The programme coordinator added that the training focused on issues of digital right, feminist internet principles, concept of gender digital gap, gender-based violence online and how to report it.

“As we are all aware, the  internet and its resources have become part and parcel of us, hence the need to make it safer, accessible and affordable for both sexes.

“To achieve this, CITAD, with support from Association for Progressive Communication, recently held the first Bauchi Feminists Internet School in Bauchi state.

“This was in order to produce digital inclusion champions in the country for bridging the Gender Digital Divide in Nigeria.

“The school offered intensive training on various topics regarding access to the use of internet as well as internet governance and policy making in the arena from feminist perspective.

“In line with the above objectives, the Jigawa CITAD office organised a step-down training to the students of Federal University Dutse and Jigawa State Polytechnic on July 18, 2019.

“The training which had 24 participants in attendance, focused on the issues of Digital Rights, the Feminist Internet Principles, Concept of Gender Digital Gap, Gender Based Violence Online (GBVO) and also how to report GBVO,” he said.

He said  the participants were encouraged to partner the centre in agitating for more digital inclusion policies both at the federal and state levels.

Sado also urged the beneficiaries to partner the centre in fighting GBVO both online and offline.

The centre had in July 1,  commenced a quarterly leadership mentoring programme for students of tertiary institutions in the state aimed at enriching the lives of the beneficiaries, through mentorship and inspiration.

It introduced and commenced the quarterly programme titled “The Inspiring Leadership Reflection Interactive Series (ILERIS) in order to empower the students with some hints for them to copy and apply in order to succeed in their future endeavours.

The professionals of repute across disciplines,  were being invited on quarterly basis to speak to participating youths about their lives, challenges, obstacles, successes and careers.
