Mr Sylvanus Unogu, Director, Population Management Department, National Population Commission (NPoPC), says reducing population growth from 3.2 per cent to two per cent by 2030 is realisable.
Unogu said on Friday in Abuja that the goal was achievable through massive advocacy by the Federal Ministry of Health.
He said that reorientations on fertility, mortality and reproductive health were imperative for achieving the goal.
“The Ministry of Health needs to brace in that regard through campaigns and advocacy for people to know the benefits and deficits,” Unogu said.
The director explained that it was time for the country to begin to reap demographic dividends.
According to him, countries such as India now reap their demographic dividends through robust population policies where many homes produce only one child.
Unogu reiterated the commitment of the commission in advancing the nation’s development and added that population policy was necessary for economic and food security.
He said the commission would continue to review population policies of the country periodically aimed at addressing emerging issues for national peace and unity.
