UN Security Council discusses DPRK missile launch

The UN Security Council will on Tuesday hold closed-door consultations on Pyongyang’s latest missile launch.

“We are going to go to the consultations room and  be briefed on what happened,” South Africa’s UN ambassador Jerry Matjila, who holds the Security Council presidency for the month of October, told reporters.

Some Security Council members may want to have an outcome, said the ambassador.

Asked what kind of outcome the council may produce, he said: “We will see as the consultation proceeds, what is possible.’’

The Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) fired a ballistic missile off its east coast on Oct. 2.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres voiced concern immediately after the missile launch.

“The launch of a ballistic missile is yet another violation of Security Council resolutions,’’ Guterres’ spokesman Stephane Dujarric told reporters on Oct. 2.
