Aviation Committee wants Enugu Airport ready before Easter

The chairman House of Representatives Committee on Aviation, Chief Nnoli Nnaji, has charged the contractor handling runway rehabilitation of the Akanu Ibiam International Airport Enugu to deliver the project before Easter.

Nnaji, who gave this charge on Thursday, while inspecting the level of work at the airport, said that the contractor could not afford to delay the completion of the project.

The Aviation Committee Chairman noted that any delay in the completion would further inconvenience people of the South East.

According to him, the people will like to use the airport during the Easter season.

“Many of them will like to come back to celebrate the season with their loved ones,’’ he said.

He disclosed that the federal government had made available all the resources, especially fund, needed to complete the project, urging the contractor to speed up the work.

“I want you to do everything possible to ensure that this project is delivered at the stipulated time, which is first week of April even if it is to work both day and night.

“Remember that you promised to complete work at the runway before Easter, keep to your words” Nnaji sad.

The federal lawmaker representing Nkanu East/Nkanu West Federal Constituency of Enugu state, however, expressed satisfaction with the quality of work already done by the contractor.

On his part, the Project Consultant, Mohammed Sani-Baba, said the contractor had no reason not to deliver the reconstruction of the runway project.

While stressing that all materials, both human and financial, had been provided, the consultant pleaded with the lawmakers to exercise patience with the construction because “most of those materials were released to them lately.”

Also, the Enugu state commissioner of Works and Infrastructure, Mr Greg Nnaji, restated the full commitment and support of the state government, led by Gov. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, to ensure that rehabilitation of the airport’s runway became a reality.

According to him, the state government has approved the recertification of additional land to the Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), as well as relocation of broadcasting mask among others as effort to ensure the completion of the project.

The commissioner gave the assurance that the state government would continue to assist FAAN toward speedy completion of the rehabilitation work at the airport’s runway.

The House Committee members were taken round the runway to inspect and also see things for themselves.
